2027 Volkswagen Atlas: What's New, What's Changing, and What Stays the Same
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is a ground-up redesign, not a light refresh, so almost everything a buyer touches, sees, or hears is new for this model year. This is the second generation of VW's three-row family SUV, and it arrives with a stronger turbocharged engine (282 horsepower), a reworked cabin with real wood and screens up to 15 inches, a longer list of standard features, and seven airbags. The boxy, family-friendly shape and the seven-seat layout carry over, so if you already know the Atlas, this guide walks through exactly what is different for 2027, what is genuinely new, and what stays the same.

What Is New on the 2027 Atlas
A Stronger, More Efficient 2.0-Liter Turbo
The updated turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder now makes 282 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, and Volkswagen says it is more fuel efficient than the engine it replaces. It pairs with an 8-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive standard and 4Motion all-wheel drive available across the lineup. Paddle shifters for Tiptronic manual gear selection are standard on every trim.
A Reimagined Interior With Real Wood and Ambient Lighting
The cabin is where the redesign shows most. Real wood décor is now standard across the range, ambient lighting is standard (10 colors on the SE, 30 colors on the SEL R-Line and above), and the dashboard carries a cleaner, more upscale look. The gear selector has moved to the steering column, which frees up the center console for a large storage area and dual wireless charging (two phones can charge side by side with Qi2 15W pads). Volkswagen's Atmospheres feature ties the ambient lighting and audio together into preset moods, adjustable through a new Driver Experience Dial on the console.
Bigger Screens and Standard Digital Cockpit Pro
Every 2027 Atlas comes with a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro gauge cluster and at least a 12.9-inch central touchscreen, and a large 15-inch infotainment display is standard from the SE with Technology trim on up. Seven USB-C ports, wireless App-Connect (wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and a three-month trial of VW's In-Vehicle Premium services (premium navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and more) round out the technology.
Seven Airbags and Upgraded Driver Assistance
A new front center airbag (between the driver and front passenger) brings the total to seven. Standard IQ.DRIVE driver assistance now includes the latest Travel Assist, which allows driver-initiated lane changes, and Emergency Assist, which can guide the vehicle to the side of the road if it senses the driver is having a medical emergency. Front and rear Park Distance Control is standard on every trim.
More Standard Comfort and Convenience
Volkswagen moved a long list of features into the standard column for 2027, including a power liftgate, newly standard rear sunshades, 3-zone Climatronic automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 12-way power driver's seat with 4-way lumbar support. Upper trims add Nappa leather, a head-up display, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a front-seat massage function.
New Exterior Styling and Three New Colors
The second-generation Atlas wears new sheet metal, new lighting with animated signatures, and (on higher trims) illuminated VW logos and door handles. Three new paint colors join the palette for 2027: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone. They sit alongside returning colors such as Deep Black Pearl, Mountain Lake Blue, Opal White, Pure Grey, and Silver Mist, with Garnet Red exclusive to the top trim.
What Is Changing From Earlier Model Years
The Atlas Is Fully Redesigned
This is the headline. The first-generation Atlas ran from 2018 through 2026 (with a 2024 refresh), and the 2027 model is an all-new second generation. If you are cross-shopping a leftover previous-generation Atlas against the 2027, you are comparing two genuinely different vehicles, not two versions of the same one.
More Power, Slightly Less Torque
The engine displacement stays at 2.0 liters, but the output changes. Horsepower rises from 269 to 282 (a gain of 13), while torque dips from 273 to 258 lb.-ft. (a drop of 15). In everyday driving, the Atlas feels a touch stronger up high, and Volkswagen pairs the new tune with a promise of better fuel economy. Official EPA figures will give the final numbers (we will add them here once they are confirmed).
The Shifter Moves to the Steering Column
The traditional console-mounted gear shifter is gone, replaced by a stalk on the steering column (the same approach VW uses on the latest Tiguan). The payoff is a roomier center console with the dual wireless charging pad.
Prices Go Up
An all-new SUV with more standard content comes with a higher sticker. The 2026 Atlas SE started around $39,310 MSRP; the 2027 SE starts at $41,610 MSRP, a jump of roughly $2,300 before the $1,525 destination charge. Reported 2027 starting prices (MSRP, before destination) are:
SE front-wheel drive | $41,610
SE 4Motion all-wheel drive | $43,610
SE with Technology front-wheel drive | $45,610
SE with Technology 4Motion all-wheel drive | $47,610
SEL R-Line (4Motion standard) | $52,110
SEL Premium R-Line (4Motion standard) | $56,610
Pricing shown is MSRP and does not include destination, taxes, title, license, or dealer fees; ask for current numbers on a specific vehicle.
Towing Setup Is Reorganized
Maximum towing stays at 5,000 pounds, but how you get there changed. The base SE now comes with 2,000-pound trailer preparation, while the SE with Technology and every trim above it include a standard factory-installed trailer hitch rated for 5,000 pounds with a braked trailer. If towing matters to you, the SE with Technology is the entry point. We are happy to walk you through the right setup for a camper, a utility trailer, or a boat.
What Stays the Same
The core recipe carries over. The Atlas is still a three-row, seven-passenger midsize SUV powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and an 8-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive standard and 4Motion all-wheel drive available. Maximum towing remains 5,000 pounds with the proper hitch, and the upright, boxy, family-first profile is intact (the second-generation body is only about an inch longer than before, with other dimensions essentially unchanged). The Atlas is still assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Volkswagen's limited warranty coverage continues at 4 years or 50,000 miles. Note that the two-row Atlas Cross Sport remains a separate model, and a hybrid version of the Atlas is planned to arrive later in this generation's life (we will cover it here when VW confirms the details).
2027 Atlas Trims: SE, SE with Technology, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line
Atlas SE
The entry point to the lineup, and better equipped than most base trims. The SE includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a power liftgate, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, real wood décor, and 10-color ambient lighting. Choose the SE if you want the redesigned Atlas at the lowest price.
Atlas SE with Technology
The step up, priced $4,000 above the SE. It adds 20-inch wheels, the 15-inch screen, illuminated exterior accents, keyless access on all five doors, and a standard factory trailer hitch rated for 5,000 pounds. Choose it if you want the bigger screen or plan to tow.
Atlas SEL R-Line
The sporty, premium trim, with 4Motion all-wheel drive standard. It brings R-Line styling, full LED projector headlights, a panoramic sunroof, Varenna leather, a head-up display, a memory driver's seat, heated and ventilated second-row outboard seats, and 30-color ambient lighting. Choose it for a sharper look and more comfort.
Atlas SEL Premium R-Line
The loaded, top-of-the-line Atlas, 4Motion standard. It adds 21-inch wheels, power-folding mirrors, Nappa leather, a front-seat massage function, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Park Assist Plus, and an Area View camera. Choose it if you want every box checked.
Equipment and packages vary by trim, and we can show you the full spec comparison on any Atlas in our inventory.
2027 Atlas vs. 2027 Atlas Cross Sport
The Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport share a platform and a powertrain, but they serve different buyers. The three-row Atlas seats seven and is built for families who need the third row (or the cargo room behind it). The two-row Atlas Cross Sport trades that third row for a sleeker roofline and five seats. If you regularly carry more than five people, the Atlas is the pick; if you want the looks without the third row, look at the Cross Sport.
Should You Buy a Leftover Previous-Generation Atlas or the 2027?
Go with the 2027 if you want the newest design, the stronger engine, the bigger screens, and the latest driver-assistance technology. A leftover previous-generation Atlas can make more sense if a discount outweighs the redesign, if you prefer the older console shifter, or if you find a specific truck at a price you like. Either way, we will work through the numbers with you, with no pressure. We make it EASY!
